About Stansted Airport

Stansted didn’t fly commercial aircraft until the 1960’s but played an important part in World War II. As part of Stansted Mountfitchet Airfield the US Air Force built the runway at Stansted in 1942 and in 1944, bombers from Stansted lead more than 600 aircraft over the beaches of France on D Day.

The airport as we know it opened in 1991 following a £400 million project to build a new terminal, and subsequent extensions of the terminal has lead to over two million passengers using the airport each year. The airport was bought by MAG in 2013.

London Stansted is the operating base for airlines such as TUI Airways, Ryanair, and Jet2.
