Bott and Co recover £4,325 from Thomas Cook after Phil Taylor and his partner’s two-week holiday in Cuba was ruined due to the poor standard of food hygiene from the hotel
Phil Taylor and his partner booked an all-inclusive holiday with Thomas Cook to visit Playa Pequerso, Cuba. As they had already stayed at the Hotel Playa Costa Verde before, they had high hopes that this would be another enjoyable break.
“I’ve been to Cuba for the last nine years and have stayed at this hotel a number of times before so I was very disappointed when I became ill.”
“It was on the fourth day that we both started to have stomach cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting. It left myself and my partner confined to our hotel room because we felt so poorly.”
“You’d see insects in the salad”
Due to the hotel being an all-inclusive basis, the couple only ever ate at the hotel and with the conditions and the hygiene of the restaurant; it was obvious they were ill from the food and water.
“The water that they were serving up at meal times had a funny taste to it so I guessed they were serving us tap water instead of bottled water. I also witnessed one of the waitress staff spitting on the floor while we were eating.”
“It was an open air restaurant which meant birds were flying around while we were eating and pecking at the food on the buffet. It was just awful”
“You’d see insects in the salad and stray cats walking around. I watched fish and meat being cooked on a hot grill. They would take the cooked prawns off with the same fork they were using to put the raw chicken on with. After that I didn’t eat any meat or fish.”
“I don’t think they did any of this on purpose, I think it’s just a lack of education and understanding of hygiene standards.”
There were many other restaurants in the hotel that had different themes but because Phil and his partner were so ill, they didn’t get a chance to go to any of them.
The couple missed out on many excursions too.
“We had trips out planned, including going on a catamaran, but we just couldn’t risk going on it because we were terrified that we would spend the whole time in the toilet.”
“We’d end up going out to get some food because we thought it would make us feel better but as soon as we ate, we needed to go straight to the toilet. The whole sickness experience was awful.”
The Thomas Cook rep wasn’t particularly helpful.
“I went to speak to the hotel staff but they weren’t very helpful so I went to speak with the Thomas Cook representative and they didn’t seem to do anything! They didn’t even send me to the doctor.”
“I’m not one for moaning about being poorly, especially as it’s only two weeks out of the year but it got me so down. It got to such an extent that I had to go and speak to the doctor on the resort myself after receiving no help from the Thomas Cook.”
“The doctor gave me an injection, two lots of tablets and rehydration sachets. I had to go back later for some more tablets as I still didn’t feel right.”
It wasn’t just Phil and his partner that became ill. “As we’ve been to Cuba before, we always meet up with the same people when we’re out there. Quite a large majority of our group fell ill at some point during the stay.
“Part of the group we met up with had sat down for dinner and one of the cats had done its business on the seat, that’s how bad it was.”
TripAdvisor reviews on the hotel…
“The hotel itself has mainly good reviews but I occasionally read the reviews at the time we were there, and there were a lot of people complaining about being ill. They had mentioned it to the hotel management but nothing was done about it.”
Claiming holiday illness compensation
“I’ve had a bad experience before with Thomas Cook but that was in relation to a flight delay. We were delayed 29 hours and they put us in a dump of a hotel. They were also a nightmare in paying us our compensation, so I didn’t have much hope.”
Phil heard a radio advert for claiming holiday illness compensation which is when he got in touch with Bott and Co.
“I got in touch with your company and it was handled great from start to finish. I couldn’t fault the holiday illness team.”
“It was way more than what I expected so I was delighted when I saw how much I would be receiving.”
