Bott and Co was a double winner at the Modern Law Awards for its recently launched and industry-leading flight delay compensation service and the only firm to scoop two awards on the night.
As one of the largest no win no fee specialist law firms in the UK, diversified in the wake of a number of industry reforms in 2013 and established a new flight delay compensation service, becoming the first law firm in the country to specialise in delayed flight compensation claims.
Securing more than 7,500 clients and almost £3m of claims in just seven months since launching in February 2013, the flight delay compensation department picked up the Team of the Year at the Modern Law awards, and co-founder of the delayed flight legal service, Coby Benson, took home the Rising Star of the Year.
The Modern Law Awards is one of the most prestigious events on the legal calendar with the ceremony held at the Dorchester Hotel in London. The shortlisting panel recognised the innovation and endeavour of Bott and Co’s flight delay compensation team in assisting air passengers and recovering compensation for delayed and cancelled flights.
It was a fantastic and well organised event and with lots of firms taking the upheaval of the legal landscape as an opportunity with both hands, it was marvellous to be recognised among those business looking forward and not back.
Coby Benson was awarded for his part in creating the ground-breaking legal service in the Rising Star category open to solicitors less than five years qualified. The service was developed following a ruling by the European Court of Justice in October 2012 that paved the way for hundreds of thousands of claimants on delayed and cancelled flights within the past six years under EU Regulation 261.
The firm was shortlisted in each of the five categories it entered: Innovation of the Year; Team of the Year; Rising Star of the Year; Alternative Business Structure (100 employees); and Compliance Officer Legal Practice (COLP) of the Year.
Paul Hinchliffe, Managing Partner at the firm commented, “Considering the tremendous effort it took to move from concept to launch in just two months, including the integration of IT systems across two countries, winning these awards is a much welcomed recognition of our incredible team here and the service they are providing for passengers unable to recover their rightful compensation from airlines.
“It was a fantastic and well organised event and with lots of firms taking the upheaval of the legal landscape as an opportunity with both hands, it was marvellous to be recognised among those business looking forward and not back.”
On receiving the Rising Star of the Year award, Coby Benson, Technical Legal Manager said: “It’s been a great team effort to get this flight compensation service off the ground, with lots of legal research and complex technology involved. I’m very flattered that my part in this has been recognised by such a prestigious event as the Modern Law awards.”
The Regulation entitles passengers to claim up to €600 for a flight that is delayed more than three hours after its scheduled arrival time when departing from an EU airport or arriving from outside the EU on an EU carrier. The compensation is paid out based on distance travelled with smaller amounts for shorter distances.
